DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that 7 out of every 10 adult owns a grill or a smoker? This can mean a lot of yummy food, but it also means an increase of home fires. From 2014-2018, there were an annual average of 8,900 house fires, involving grills. A grill placed to close to anything that can catch on fire is considered a fire hazard. Grills can be extremely hot, also causing burn injuries. National Fire Protection Association has put together safety tips to keep you and your family safe this summer.

SAFETY TIPS

  • Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors
  • Grills should be placed away from home, deck railing, and out from under low tree branches
  • Keep children and pets at least 3ft away from grill while using
  • NEVER leave the grill unattended
  • Always make sure the lid is open before lighting the grill (org)

If you have more questions about grill safety, check out https://www.nfpa.org/Public-Education/Fire-causes-and-risks/Seasonal-fire-causes/Grilling for more details. If you experience a house fire, call SERVPRO of East Kalamazoo at (269) 342-2366.

Tips for Fall Storm Preparation in Kalamazoo, MI

10/13/2021 (Permalink)

Gutters filled with autumn leaves We are always available 24/7 to restore your home and make it “Like it never even happened.”

While hurricane and tropical storm season officially starts in June, peak activity tends to occur later during the fall, beginning in late August and extending through October. This season is most likely to produce severe storms that bring the threat of potential property damage. There is no guarantee that a storm will strike, nor is that any assurance that you can prevent all damage if it does. Nevertheless, statistics show that a few preventative measures can help improve the odds. Here are a few preventative measures you can take for fall storm preparation:

  • Protect your roof by cutting back limbs to establish a clear zone around your house.
  • Clean the gutters. Autumn leaves often clog gutters which can cause the gutters to overflow during heavy rain, which can cause water damage and mold growth.
  • Prevent basement flooding by installing a sump pump to remove water before it accumulates. If you already have one, before to test it by pouring five gallons of water into the sump basin to verify that it’s ready.

When a natural fiasco strikes your home, do not panic; call SERVPRO of East Kalamazoo at (269) 342-2366. We are always available 24/7 to restore your home and make it “Like it never even happened.”

SMOKE ALARM

A smoke alarm can sense smoke before you can, alerting you to danger. In the event of a fire, you might have as little as two minutes to escape safely. This is the reason it is very important to have one in every bedroom, outside of sleeping areas, and on each level on the home, including the basement. It is advised to not have a smoke alarm in your kitchen or bathrooms.

CARBON MONOXIDE ALARM

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that displaces you unconscious before you even realize something is wrong. Without vital oxygen, you are at risk of death from carbon monoxide poisoning in a short time. CO alarms detect the presence of carbon monoxide and alert you so you call get out, call 9-1-1 and let the professionals check your home.

Burnt Laptop If fire occurs in your business, call SERVPRO of East Kalamazoo at (269) 342-2366 and we will make it “Like it never even happened.”

When it comes to a fire in your facility as a business owner you might be concerned about your electronics. Electronics that are not completely ruined by a fire may benefit from being cleaned. Fire cleanup professionals who specialize in electronics rely on several restoration methods.

Restoration experts can remove electronics from the site of a fire and work on them in a controlled location. There, they may be able to address several results of fire damage such as;

  • Corrosion of circuits due to acidity of smoke
  • Formation of black film of smoke or soot over internal components
  • Warped electronics that suffered closer exposure to fire

These experts may be carefully clean corrosion or black film from the inside of computers, mobile devices or other electronics exposed to smoke damage. Corrosion or black film can both lead to short-circuiting and put residents at risk of starting another fire. If a device is no longer functional, it may be possible to retrieve data. In case of devices that are beyond restoration or data retrieval, restoration experts that specialize in electronics can supply owners with proof of loss that make it easier to file a claim and obtain replacements for damage electronics.

We understand that the process can be overwhelming. Our team is here for you every step of the way. If fire occurs in your business, call SERVPRO of East Kalamazoo at (269) 342-2366 and we will make it “Like it never even happened.”
